Description

This quality coin display celebrates the national call-out to women to join the workforce during WWII and that unique moment in history where steel was substituted for copper by the U.S. Mint to produce pennies. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 the United States sent hundreds of thousands of its men to combat and drastically ramped-up production to win the war — so factory workers and certain metals were in very short supply! America’s women rose to the call and ‘Rosie the Riveter’ became the iconic leader of all the women who went to factories, shipyards, construction crews and more to roll up their sleeves and work hard. Copper was badly needed to make parts of ammunition firing assemblies so the ubiquitous Lincoln/Wheat penny was instead made with steel — making it a coin collector favorite ever since.

The attractive acrylic housing displays the Rosie the Riveter salute and mounted 1943 Steel Penny to show at a glance the great strength that is a part of the ‘We can do it’ spirit. The 1943 Steel Penny is composed of a steel alloy and coated with zinc. The protective case displays a colorful educational insert and shows both sides of the coin.
